Historic villas, second homes and lakeside hospitality, with marble restored in the quiet season.

Marble restoration in Cernobbio calls for a different kind of planning from a city job. The town stretches along the western shore of Lake Como, just north of Como itself, between the lakefront promenade, a small centre gathered around the ferry landing and the wooded hills behind. It is known for historic villas with gardens running down to the water, long-established hotels, newer homes built into the slopes and holiday houses that are lived in for only part of the year.
In these settings marble is often the defining material: reception rooms, grand staircases, carved fireplaces, terraces, bathrooms and kitchens. We travel from Milan to work on them with a clear method, a free written quote and a timetable shaped around the rhythm of the lake.
The historic villas of Cernobbio often hold remarkable marble: inlaid floors alternating white, grey and black, white marble entrance stairs, sculpted fireplaces, balustrades and thresholds linking the rooms to the gardens. Many have seen a century or more of use, layers of wax, partial repairs, mismatched filler and scratches from daily life.
We work on them in stages. First the accumulated coatings come off, then we decide whether genuine grinding is needed or polishing alone will do. Joints are refilled in matching colours, chipped edges rebuilt, and the final finish chosen with you to suit the age and style of the house; a mirror gloss is not always right for a nineteenth-century salon.
The stones themselves vary. Alongside Carrara whites and Botticino, the lake has its own tradition, notably the dark Varenna black quarried on the eastern shore, used for chequerboard floors, thresholds and surrounds. Each stone responds differently to abrasives and to damp, so we identify every one before choosing a treatment and test the finish on a discreet area first.
Life in Cernobbio follows the tourist season. From spring to early autumn the villas are full, holiday homes are occupied, hotels run at capacity and the lakefront is busy. It is the least convenient time to open a project that needs machines, water and rooms closed for several days.
Where possible we recommend scheduling major work in the quiet months, from late autumn to early spring. Houses are empty or lightly used, rooms can be cleared easily and the lake roads are quieter. Many owners live elsewhere and leave the work to us with the agreement of their caretaker or property manager; we send photos before, during and after so you can follow progress from afar.
Hospitality venues follow the same logic: the winter closure is the ideal moment to restore lobbies, staircases and dining rooms, ready for opening day. The visit can take place well in advance, even in high summer, to lock in dates early.

A lakeside house shut for months gathers moisture, and on reopening the marble may show tide marks, dullness or small salt deposits. A breathable sealer and a maintenance visit timed before the family arrives prevent those surprises. On terraces and loggias, where marble faces winter frost and summer sun, we check joints, falls and surface condition before any work begins.
Historic homes, hotels and holiday houses each need something different.

Yes. Many owners spend most of the year elsewhere. We agree access with you, your caretaker or your property manager, and send photos at each stage. At the end you receive written care instructions for every treated surface.
Generally the low season, from late autumn to early spring, when the house is quieter, the lake roads are clear and the work does not clash with summer life. We suggest booking the visit a few months ahead to reserve dates.
Yes, with care. Different coloured marbles have different hardness and respond differently to abrasives, so we work through gradual sequences and check flatness constantly. Very little material is removed and the pattern is preserved.
The quote reflects the area, the number and type of stones, the level of wear, repairs and logistics such as access, floors to reach and furniture protection. Every house is different, so after the visit you receive a free, itemised written quote.
Message us on WhatsApp, with a few photos if you can, or fill in the quote request form. We will arrange a visit at the time that best fits the house’s calendar.
