Period marble behind quiet courtyard doors

Marble restoration in Brera rarely means dealing with new stone. Here the marble is the worn threshold of an eighteenth-century palazzo, the slab floor of a flat overlooking an inner courtyard, the fireplace in a nineteenth-century drawing room or the worktop of a kitchen carved out of a former attic. These surfaces have lived through several generations, and most carry layers of wax, polish and earlier repairs.

Les Traitements du Sud works the stone itself. We grind, polish, repair and protect marble without hiding it under a film-forming coating, so that it regains a healthy, luminous surface while keeping the character of a period home.

It all starts with a free visit, or a few photos sent over WhatsApp. We tell you honestly what can be achieved and follow up with a detailed written quote.

The district

An old quarter of palazzi, courtyards and galleries

Brera is one of the oldest and best-preserved parts of Milan. Its narrow streets, many of them pedestrianised or restricted to traffic, are lined with aristocratic palazzi and older tenement buildings reworked over the centuries. Understated façades open onto inner courtyards, stone staircases and high-ceilinged apartments. The neighbourhood has long been tied to the art world, with its academy, libraries and galleries, and interiors here matter as much as the street fronts.

That layering shows in the floors. A single building may combine an entrance hall paved in Lombard stone, a staircase with white or grey marble treads, flats whose marble floors were relaid after the war and bathrooms recently redone in Calacatta or Statuario. In period homes we frequently meet Carrara whites with grey veining, Bardiglio and warm-toned Botticino, sometimes with black or red inserts in geometric patterns. Each belongs to a different era and calls for a different approach.

Common issues

What we tend to find in Brera homes

I

Yellowed wax

Years of wax and polish that trap dirt and dull the colour of the stone.

II

Uneven slabs

Slight lipping caused by settling floors, corrected by careful grinding.

III

Worn thresholds

Doorways showing a dull hollow in the middle of the slab.

IV

Open joints

Empty or cracked grout lines, chipped edges and old repairs that no longer match.

Access

Working in a largely pedestrian neighbourhood

In Brera, logistics are part of the craft. Many streets are pedestrianised or restricted, the district lies within Area C and parking a van is rarely easy. We plan deliveries for permitted hours, bring compact machines that can be dismantled, and organise materials in advance.

Lifts in period buildings are often tiny, sometimes missing altogether, so our equipment is chosen to fit narrow stairwells and low doorways. We work wet, extract the slurry and protect walls, skirting boards and furniture before starting. Building rules on noisy work are respected, and for communal areas we coordinate with the building manager so that residents are informed.

Our approach

Restoring without erasing the past

A mirror shine is not always what a period home needs. On a nineteenth-century white marble floor, a satin or soft honed finish often suits the light and the original look better. Before treating a whole room we prepare a small sample in a discreet corner, so you can choose the level of sheen.

Deep scratches and lipping call for progressive grinding, which also strips old wax. This is followed by polishing with ever finer diamond abrasives and, on heavily used floors, crystallisation to harden the surface. Chips and open joints receive a colour-matched repair mixed on site. On patterned marble floors, each stone reacts differently: black marble polishes faster than white, red can be softer, so pressure and timing are adjusted slab by slab.

Fireplaces deserve a word of their own. Many Brera drawing rooms still have their original marble surrounds, often darkened by decades of soot and yellowed by old polishes. We clean them with poultices suited to the stone, rebuild chipped mouldings and finish them to match the floor, so the room reads as a coherent whole once more.

FAQ

Marble restoration in Brera: your questions

Can a period floor be ground without damaging it?

Yes, provided the slabs are thick enough, which is usually the case in older buildings. Grinding removes only a fraction of a millimetre, just enough to clear scratches and lipping. We check thickness and condition first, and where an area is fragile we limit the work to polishing and local repairs.

How do you deal with access in a pedestrian street?

We schedule loading during permitted hours and use compact machines that can be carried by hand when the lift is small or absent. If an access or parking permit is needed, we discuss it during the visit so there are no surprises on the first day.

Can I have a finish that is not too glossy?

Of course. Many owners of period homes prefer satin or soft honed marble. The level of sheen depends on the final abrasive and on whether we crystallise, and we always show you a sample first.

What does the price depend on?

Floor area, type of marble, depth of scratches, old wax to strip, repairs and access conditions. We do not publish rates: after the visit you receive a free, itemised written quote.
